The final appearances of Russkaya Cappella in the 2016-17 season are approaching
The programme marks the centenary of the Russian revolutions.
Saturday 10 June at 13.00: Renfield St Stephen's Church, Bath Street
Sunday 11 June at 19.30: Hyndland Parish Church, in the West End Festival
The first concert lasts approximately 45 minutes and contains a selection from the longer programme. The second lasts about 90 minutes. We shall sing music performed in 1917 as well as music composed or arranged during the Civil War and the first years of peace.
On the 11th you will hear in full:
- · Kastalsky’s large-scale ‘Requiem for Fallen Brothers’, performed for the first time in 1917 in Russia and Britain (conducted by Sir Henry Wood) and thereafter forgotten for many decades;
- · choral compositions by classic composers;
- · songs sung by soldiers of the White and Red armies;
- · choruses written by ‘proletarian’ composers;

The composers and arrangers include Viktor Kalinnikov, Nikolay Cherepnin, Alexander Gretchaninoff, Grigory Lobachov and Sergey Pototsky. Nikolay Medtner’s Sonata Tragica of 1919 will be played by pianist Ivan Penev. Susan Sheldon, solo soprano, Alexey Gusev, solo baritone, and the string quintet from the Orchestra of Scottish Opera are expected to take part in the concert on 11 June. We hope to see you in June.
